Tonight’s concert is dedicated to the music of three 20th-century artists, and focuses mainly on the flute and piano repertoire.
Stylistically speaking, Weinberg’s works fall under the category of neoclassical music. Many of his compositions are based on autobiographical threads, related to his wartime experiences, including the tragic fate of his family who died at the concentration camp in Trawniki. The outbreak of war forced the composer himself to escape from his hometown Warsaw. He emigrated to the USSR, and spent most of his lifetime in Moscow.
First, we will listen to Mieczysław Weinberg’s 2 Mazurkas for solo piano. Composed in 1933, when the author was only 14, they are amongst his earliest preserved works. Both miniatures are short and formally simple compositions, with a distinct rhythm and character. Their important characteristic are references to Polish and Jewish folk music.
Composed in 1947, the 5 Pieces for flute and piano constitute the form of a suite. The opening piece Landscape begins with a quotation from Debussy’s prelude The Girl with the Flaxen Hair. The following two pieces are dances, with distinct and systematic metro-rhythmic patterns. The fourth piece, Aria, is the emotional core of the entire suite. The suite is rendered complete with the Third Dance, in which the two instruments engage in an amusing and lively dialogue. The striking finale, brimming with energy, puts an ideal finishing touch to the whole series.
In the 1930s, Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern was considered as one of the most outstanding composers of his generation. Due to his Jewish ancestry, he had to change his domicile several times after the outbreak of war. His early compositions were greatly influenced by Szymanowski’s works, and the impressionist style. At later stages of his career, neoclassical trends came to the fore. Additionally, he wrote a number of valuable didactic works.
The neoclassical Sonatina for flute and piano was composed in 1948, i.e. during the “American” period. The small but charming composition unveils a plethora of colourful musical ideas.
In the concert’s finale we will listen to the music of Aaron Copland, a composer and conductor who came to be referred to as the father of American music.
His Duet for flute and piano was composed in remembrance of William Kincaid, an outstanding flautist and one of the most influential American musicians and teachers. The work was commissioned by the students and friends of the artist, who died in 1967.

MAREK BRACHA  is seen as one of Poland’s most interesting pianists of the new generation. An artist with a refined and beautifully understated expressive style, Bracha is well versed in the classical and romantic repertoire, and feels equally comfortable with modern and period instruments. He is also pursuing systematic research into eighteenth- and nineteenth-century performance practice. A highly versatile artist with a busy schedule, Marek Bracha promotes Polish music internationally and is no stranger to modern repertoire, including successful world premieres of new music. He has collaborated on a regular basis with conductors including Alun Francis, José Maria Florêncio, Wojciech Rodek, Jakub Chrenowicz and Jacek Kaspszyk. His artistic collaborations as a chamber musician include joint projects with Tobias Koch, Marcin Masecki, Agata Szymczewska, Maciej Frąckiewicz, the Atom String Quartet, the Royal String Quartet and the Meccore String Quartet. In July 2017 Marek performed with the Scharoun Ensemble der Berliner Philharmoniker. In April this year Bracha performed at the Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, playing Władysław Szpilman’s Concertino for Piano and Orchestra and Richard Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto with Sinfonia Varsovia under the conductor Jerzy Maksymiuk. Soon after that Marek appeared alongside the musicians of the Sharoun Ensemble der Berliner Philharmoniker at the opening gala concert of the 5th Emanacje Festival in Lusławice. Artists presented W. A Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor K. 478 and F. Schubert’s Piano Quintet The Trout. Over the past months Marek appeared with series of recitals in Japan. He also participated as a lecturer and tutor at fortepiano masterclass taking place in Lusławice in September. The National Chopin Institute in Poland (NIFC) released his debut solo album featuring pieces by Chopin and some of his latest notable achievements include the release of Modern Soul, an album he recorded with the eminent violinist Agata Szymczewska and promoted with a concert at the National Polish Radio Symphonic Orchestra concert hall (NOSPR) in October 2016. Modern Soul went on to win the prestigious Supersonic Prize awarded by the “Pizzicato” magazine. Marek Bracha has appeared at many music festivals and projects worldwide, including three appearances at the prestigious EXPO exhibitions (Hannover 2000, Aichi 2005 and Milan 2015). In 2010, Bracha gave the closing concert during the Chopin Year celebrations at the NCPA in Beijing. In 2013, the National Chopin Institute in Poland (NIFC) released his debut solo album featuring pieces by Chopin.
